Sutton Suspended For 8 Games

Brendan Shanahan with the verdict.

added 9:13pm, Last Saturday, Sutton was a guest on the HNIC segment After Hours.

I’ve added the video below and if you scroll to the 6:40 mark, you basically hear him saying he doesn’t plan to change his game.  This was of course before his latest incident but his first suspension sure did not change his mind much.

When did leaping in the air targeting someones head (on more than one occasion) become a staple of the “man’s game”? Hockey is a great sport and Andy Sutton is a black eye tarnishing the image.  He’s lucky it wasn’t longer, but hopefully this will be enough to finally get through that thick skull of his.

Eight games?  less than a month after getting back from a five game suspension?  Grow some god damn balls, Shanahan, and throw the book at someone for *#$%@&’s sake.

This.

He’s a repeat offender, and a repeat offender even before this year’s suspensions.  He’s a big, dumb, stupid oaf who does not learn.

Completely insufficient. Should have been more like 20 games since he just came back from a suspension for a hit to the head and has been suspended in the past FOR THE SAME THING. That’s not hockey, it’s thuggery.

If everyone were like Oilers Rock, there wouldn’t be anyone left to play the game because everyone would be out with concussions or spinal fractures.

I can’t complain too much about the suspension, some think it excessive others think it isn’t enough. That tells me it is about right.  A year ago we would have thought this was the greatest suspension ever, now it seems tame. I like it.

Well OR, the only reason I remembered it is that I watched it.  Then it was trying to figure out where I saw it and luckily someone placed it on YT.

I don’t buy that at all.  An Oilers fan says it’s too much, I doubt you’ll many other who will agree (and I know a few Oilers fans who agree it wasn’t enough).  Last year if a guy got a five game suspension, then a month later got eight games for a worse hit nobody but nobody would be saying it’s a great suspension.

Welcome back, Wheel of Justice.

I think it should’ve been more.  15-20 would’ve probably been the right amount since he was just suspended a few weeks ago.

I figured at least double digits was a no-brainer…

I think it should have been 20 games.

One of the problems with the way it is done currently….
The team/franchise are allowed to just replace him for the suspension.
If they were not allowed to substitute for a suspended player and had to shorten
the roster by one player for the duration, there certainly would be fewer repeat offenses.

Exactly, a suspended player should count towards a teams roster limit.  The team should be penalized for the players action as well.  You employ a repeat offender and he gets a 20 game suspension, then you’re screwed for 20 games as a team too.  Teams would then think twice about employing these kinds of players, and thus players would have to think twice about being that kind of player.

Sadly, it seems the only one the league is willing to throw the book at is Matt Cooke. Sutton should have been treated in similar fashion to what Cooke got last year.  Both are repeat offenders who target the head in dangerous ways.  Cooke got a really long suspension—which he completely deserved.  But a meager 8 games for someone like Sutton only makes it look like there is a Matt Cooke standard and then there is a separate standard for every player not named Matt Cooke—repeat offender or not.

Moreover, when you look at Cooke’s play this year, you can argue convincingly that that suspension changed his behavior and ultimately was in the best interest of his opponents, his employers and Cooke himself.  He is playing a cleaner, safer, yet still effective game.  This is how suspensions are supposed to work.  Sutton should have gotten some of the same medicine.

The NHLPA needs to get involved here, too. When you have someone recklessly endangering other PA members, they need to sit him down and tell him to knock it off.
