Surprised David Poile Was Surprised

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province at the Calgary Herald,

Seriously, how can he be surprised? Suter had been on his way to unrestricted free agency for well more than a year and had rebuffed every previous attempt the Preds had made to re-sign him. The newspapers for more than two months were absolutely full of stories speculating whether it would be Detroit or Pittsburgh or any other team which would land the services of Suter. The Red Wings had more than $20 million US cap space at the time and had just lost Nick Lidstrom.

How in the world could Poile have been ‘surprised’ when shortly after July 1, Suter left the Predators? Had he been in one of those mountain caves in Pakistan trying to stay away from drone attacks? Had he been in a comma for more than a year?

Nobody was surprised. And to be perfectly blunt, it doesn’t matter what Suter or Suter’s agent had been telling them. If he’s not signed coming up to the deadline, you’re in deep doo-doo pal! You’ve been a general manager in this league for 30 years and seen this happen like clockwork every season since free agency existed. What could possibly have come as a surprise?

Well, that’s just…weird.  I had to make sure I wasn’t drinking something that would induce a coma.

Poile saying he was surprised isn’t an indication of him being surprised by what Suter did.  He’s trying to finesse the point of view that he was surprised Suter would do something so obviously contrary to the kind of stand-up guy Poile thought he was by going out and, ohmigod, signing for more money somewhere else.

Poile is doing this to cover his ass, mostly, and to paint Suter as a slightly bad guy, partially.  Which helps him cover his ass.  So I suppose he’s just saying that entirely to cover his ass at the end of the day.

He’ll also express surprise when Weber bolts for elsewhere, implying similarly that he never thought a guy like Weber would stab the franchise in the back like that, although neither Suter nor Weber were really doing any such thing.

I agree with this article and what hockeyinhd is saying… Poile lost a valuable asset for nothing.  He could have traded suter prior to last season, during the season, at the trade deadline, or in the summer before july 1st but instead chose to ignore all the signs that nearly anyone could see and got nothing to show for it.  The recent comments from poile are meant to divert any fan anger away from himself.

To make things worse, he is about to repeat the same exact thing with weber.

If Poile doesn’t trade Weber before next summer (and he won’t because in his giant ego mind he can’t fathom anyone leaving The Hockey Mecca that is Nashville) he will be exposed for what he truly is….. (see narcissism)

As the gentleman posted earlier, Poile is covering his ass.  That fanbase thinks there is no better place to live or play, but then again they think they are a Cup Contender also.  They posted this morning that they thought talks with Weber were going well, just as they did with Suter.  Sometimes people just don’t read the writing on the wall, be it out of ignorance, or just denial.  Weber has rejected a few offers from Poile reportedly, and I will be surprised if he stays in Nashville.  The team is not on the cusp of winning anything significant, so why remain here ?

I was in a comma for a year once. When I came out of it, my English teacher was standing there scowling, telling me that for a pause that long I really should use a period instead.
