"Our vital signs are strong," commissioner Gary Bettman said in his state of the league address during the playoffs. The league's No. 1 booster is supposed to say that, but the NHL's business has actually grown in 12 months, enough to significantly raise the spending levels that are based on projected revenues for next season. That has attracted attention from well-heeled investors looking to buy in, a welcome sign of market confidence for a league that had owners tripping over each other to sell before the lockout. It could be the best indicator that the new era heralded by the NHL and the players association when they reached this collective bargaining agreement has truly emerged.
