Start Talking Hockey Again

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

Only two things, it would seem, can stop the NHL from finally beginning its season sometime early in the new year.

An act of God, something more definitive than that which the Mayan calendar produced last week.

Or the sudden, forced departure of Gary Bettman at the hands of embittered hardliners in the NHL camp.

Since neither is anticipated, feel free to start imagining cold Saturday nights in front of the fire with the game on again, and familiar faces like Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos flitting across the screen, and the beginning of another Maple Leaf soap opera-like season, and a resumption of the always fascinating discussion as to why hockey doesn’t sell in Phoenix.

The only talking I am going to do is call DirecTV and cancel my Center Ice Package.

...only the removal of Bettman by owners who believe he has already surrendered too much ground seems likely to stop this deal from getting done.

Okay, so it’s hockey with Bettman – or no hockey and no Bettman. Now that’s a true conundrum.

“If this or something close to this doesn’t get it done, we’re not playing,” said one league source. “Then we’re in a twilight zone. See you in the fall with 26 teams.”

And there’s one more reason to hope a deal doesn’t get done.

Personally, I could accept losing this season if it meant getting rid of the Garden Gnome and four of the money-sucking teams.

Why ??  It’s the same reason hockey doesn’t work in Florida or Texas or any of the southern states.  People move to warmer climates to GET AWAY from the cold.  The LAST thing they want is to sit in a cold arena for 3 hours and watch hockey.

Bettman should know this ... he’s jewish ... I’m sure he has countless relatives that have spewed the words “UCH !! I hate the cold .. I’m moving to Florida”.

The NHL has been a league for 95 years ... what makes Bettman or any of these owners think that all of a sudden people in the south will enjoy something cold besides beer ???

Personally, I like hockey being “regional”.  If it does become a National success then we’ll see hockey 24/7 on every TV channel and thats just too much of a good thing.

I would welcome contraction with open arms ... especially if it eliminates all of the bickering over contract length and salary limits.
