Stars Of The Week

NEW YORK (March 26, 2007)—New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, San Jose Sharks right wing Jonathan Cheechoo and Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending March 25.
Each Monday, the NHL will recognize three players who delivered the League’s top performances over the past week.

FIRST STAR—HENRIK LUNDQVIST, G, NEW YORK RANGERS

Lundqvist posted a 4-0-0 record with a 0.72 goals-against average and .974 save percentage as the Rangers (39-28-9, 87 points) moved up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Lundqvist made 21 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins March 19, recorded his fifth shutout of the season in a 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers March 21, made 40 stops in a 2-1 shootout win at Boston March 24 and finished the week with 34 saves in a 2-1 overtime decision over the New York Islanders March 25. Lundqvist is 34-21-7 for the season, recording a 2.30 GAA, .918 save percentage and five shutouts.

SECOND STAR—JONATHAN CHEECHOO, RW, SAN JOSE SHARKS

Cheechoo led all NHL goal-scorers and tied for the League scoring lead, recording eight points (six goals, two assists) in three road games. He opened the week with two goals and one assist in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks March 21, notched his seventh career hat trick and one assist in a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers March 22 and scored one goal in a 6-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes March 24. Cheechoo ranks third on the Sharks in scoring with 62 points (31 goals, 31 assists) in 70 games.

THIRD STAR—JAROSLAV HALAK, G, MONTREAL CANADIENS

Halak posted a 3-0-0 record, 1.33 goals-against average and .957 save percentage, helping the Canadiens (39-31-6, 84 points) remain in contention for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Halak made 30 saves in recording his first NHL shutout as the Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins 1-0 March 20. He turned aside 29 of 32 shots in a 6-3 win over the Bruins March 22 and made 30 saves in a 4-1 victory over Washington Capitals March 24. Recalled from the American Hockey League Feb. 15, the 21-year-old Bratislava, Slovakia native made his NHL debut Feb. 18 and has posted a 7-4-0 record with a 2.84 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and one shutout in 11 games.
