Stars And Gonchar Agree To Contract Terms

from TSN,

The Dallas Stars have agreed to terms on a two-year, $10 million contract with defenceman Sergei Gonchar, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

The deal is pending the completion of signed paperwork.

The Stars acquired Gonchar from the Ottawa Senators on Friday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in this year's draft.

Dreger reported that Gonchar's agent, JP Barry, was given permission to find a trade partner for Ottawa when the Senators decided not to re-sign the veteran defenceman. KHL interest accelerated the process for Gonchar, who will likely agree to a two-year deal with the Stars.

It’s too expensive, but he’s competing against the KHL and Gonchar’s past contracts.  A guy who has been making in that 4M neighborhood and has 6M waiting for him in Russia isn’t going to take less.  Plus, he’s a solid 20 minutes a night of NHL caliber defenseman play even if you have to limit his shifts to offensive ones.  The Stars have a few young good defensive guys and this will help them play their role by not making them overextend the way they have the last few years with Robidas.  There aren’t a lot of guys like that available.  I think Mark Streit will get more than 2/$5M and probably wouldn’t have considered the Stars to begin with.  In summary; I think it’s too pricey by far but can at least be understood.

One question I had…  In the 07-09 range, who was Gonchar paired with?  I know they had Scuderi, Orpik, Whitney, Gonchar and Goligosky (at probably his peak or at least when he looked like he had the most potential).  That could’ve been a factor in their thinking as well if Gonchar was a stabilizing force for Goligosky previously, even if a near-lifetime ago as the two’s careers go.
