Sportsnet Says Semin About To Play In Pittsburgh

Sportsnet is citing a report coming out of Russia stating Semin is about to sign with the Penguins.

Semin’s agent declined to comment.

I suggest waiting for more information before running with this report.

I can’t decide if I want this to be true or not. I’m leaning toward not, but at least the Pens have a better leadership/accountability structure in place than the Caps, so if he’s willing to come in and be part of the team, rather than a loner, he definitely has skills.

If its a one or two year deal at a reasonable price, i love the signing.

Two things…the kid can flat out score, period.  He would be lethal on a line with Sid or Geno.  Second, you never know…under Bylsma he can completely buy in and maybe develop some toughness and solid forechecking and backchecking.  I would love a one year deal no matter what the price.  He’s an incredible talent.  Geno would be excited for sure to have another Russian on the team.  I just see a lot more positives than negatives if he were to come here.

Anybody else think this is kinda funny. He leaves a team with ovechkin, to play on a team with malkin and crosby.

he knows if he signs with the Guins there is an open spot on the wing with Crosby & The open spot on the LW Boards on the PP & he will kill it & then sign somewhere else for a Long term Big money deal

Too bad he’s going to a team without discipline once again. Nobody pushed him in Washington. What makes you think he’ll get the help in Pitt? Just look how the Penguins imploded in the playoffs last season. Exactly what Semin DOES NOT need in a new team. I predict a semi hot start, that tails off into a sub-standard 2/3’s of the season. And followed by his departure to somewhere uneventful.

Nice land for Shero, this guy is one of the premier scoring left wings (with a coveted right shot) in the NHL over the last four years.

The penguins may be indiscipline (from the HC to the captain and on down), but they are certainly not loafers.    I’m very much not a Crosby fan but you always hear how hard a worker he is and it shows.  I think, sadly, this will do good things for Semin’s career.  It worked for Fedetenko and he is half the player, with many similiar flaws.

Yeah Crosby does work hard, but when he doesn’t succeed, he loses his focus and that is what will eat Semin alive. And if Fleury plays anywhere near how he did in the post season, look out cuz it’s gonna be a long season for the pens…..... and Semin more importantly.

Semin is a goaltender’s nightmare.

Quick release, ability to shoot in stride, and shoots from either foot.

I hate that about him… When he lost in the SC Finals, he lost all kinds of focus the following season and playoffs.  Or like when he lost faceoffs all the time and he lost focus to become a good faceoff man… Or when he was not successful at scoring goals he lost focus and will never win a rocket richard… Damn I hate that loser.

You’re funny.

Or like when he disappeared from the first round after four games when his team needed him most? But at least he won some face offs. Phew. That almost pushed them into the Conference finals in reality.

Bottom line, I think Semin will not thrive in Pitt. I don’t have a crystal ball, and maybe we’ll never know. It’s be nice to find out.

It’ll be an interesting experiment, but I don’t know why people assume he’ll just change.

I dunno.  I always thought Sportsnet felt like reading Larry Brooks’ paper, The NYPost:  something cagey about that outfit.

Semin and Doan. One will go to Detroit the other to Pittsburgh. Who ever signs Doan, the other gets Semin. However, Semi will only be a one year deal.

Didn’t Semin say a few years ago that Crosby was not a real superstar and that everybody could be a superstar like Crosby if the league would only promote him?

The Penguins melted down, but that’s not really the knock on Semin. The knock on him is that he doesn’t work and doesn’t give a crap, not that he’ll foolishly get thrown out of games for beating up the other team’s best defenseman at 3-3 in the first period or get suspended for charging two guys on the same shift in the same game he splits the D and scores a pretty goal.

Work and passion are NOT things that have been even vaguely lacking in the Penguins locker room since, probably, 2005-2006, and that was an isolated year. Even those horrible teams pre-lockout had good work ethics, if nothing else. Buchburger, Fata, Koltsov…whatever else these players may have been, they weren’t inconsistent floaters.

Back on topic, if this is a short term deal (read 1 year, 2 tops), I’m fine with it, almost regardless of the dollars involved. He was the one who chased them, after all, which already shows commitment beyond what you normally see from Semin. He also had a pretty stellar WC and a bit more dedicated second-half than what we’re used to seeing from Semin. He’s got the skill to justify taking a flier; but only taking a flier.

If there’s a third year or more, I don’t like it at all because I just don’t trust this player to do his job long-term no matter who surrounds him.

The guy just flat out does not bring it every night.  Many of his goals come in multi goal games where he is humming.  He was awful taking stupid penalties night after night.  How much do you want to pay for a guy that is only good 1/2 the time?

He called him driftwood, said he was a good passer with a good brain who couldn’t do anything else and compared him unfavorably to Pat Kane. Then Crosby won a Richard and Kane beat up a cab driver. So yeah, that first day might be interesting.

So, has this been confirmed? All I see are the words “unconfirmed” and “false rumor” when I did a quick search on Google, which tells me all of this is irrelevant.

Sportsnet has been known to be full of crap at times, anyway. I’ll wait until TSN can confirm it.

According to Bylsma and Shero, they’re talking to Semin as well as other players. According to Pittsburgh’s reporters, there are negotiations but nothing’s imminent or settled. According to some Russian reporter, it’s nearly done. And according to Mark Gandler, no comment.

So it depends on who you believe.

Understatement of the year.

The Pens are not lacking discipline, they are a very good team.  It’s easy to forget that Bylsma was taught how to coach by Mike Babcock.  They run virtually the same system and the two teams play almost the same game.  Thats a fact that is hard for both Wings and Pens fans to admit, but it is true.
