Spezza Available?

via TSN,

With two days to go until Wednesday's 3pm et deadline, there's some trade speculation surrounding Jason Spezza and the Ottawa Senators.

Sources tell TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger that the team is 'quietly gauging interest' on the Senators captain, though Spezza has a limited no-trade clause and carries a large contract.

The news comes amidst other reports that the Senators have been been searching for a winger to play with him.

The 30-year-old centre has one year remaining on his current deal which pays him $4 million next season - but with a $7 million cap hit. The team signed him to a seven-year, $49 million contract in 2007.

Could the Wings possibly take two captains from Ottawa in one year?

I would think there will be a lot of interest in Spezza. Presumably, if he waives his NTC (limited? wonder how so), it would be to go to a team he’d be open to re-signing with after next season. His final salary of $4MM seems more than reasonable for a 55-60 pt guy.

Seems odd that they’d consider trading him, maybe they see him following Alfredsson due to the

non-problems that don’t exist

there with the ownership. Their fanbase will probably go ballistic if they trade Spezza. Wonder how it may change the perception of Alfredsson’s departure.

If they trade Spezza (and especially if they trade Spezza and Philips) then they might as well just start looking for a new city to play in.

I would be shocked to see them trade him, much less to an Eastern Conference rival.  And if they did trade him, it would have to be a homerun deal or the fans there would have Murray swinging from a lamp post soon after.

Now next season is a different story…

Maybe the article got it backwards… Spezza is looking to trade the Senators.

Doubt it. Spezza has never been a popular player here for a multitude of reasons, some valid, others silly. But I don’t think there would be a huge uproar (or much of one at all really) if they moved him, assuming it was a hockey trade and not picks and prospects.

I get what you’re saying but I meant for from the perspective that they let their longtime captain leave, then they would be trading their new captain while they’re still within spitting distance of the playoffs, and it’s at the same time as people are talking about the Sens looking for a top flight winger to play with Spezza.

To trade Spezza (especially if they also part ways with Chris Philips) would essentially be them giving up on the season and the near future.
