Sour ‘Grapes’

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,

The Carolina Hurricanes have attracted a lot of attention with their postgame palooza after wins at PNC Arena. On Friday, after a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, Warren Foegele connected on a “walkout homer” off Dougie Hamilton that touched off a wild celebration at “home plate” with his teammates after he touched all the “bases.”

That also touched off a diatribe from Don Cherry, the bombastic one on Hockey Night in Canada and the Craig Sager wanna-be with his fluorescent haberdashery. Cherry, never at a loss for words, called the Canes “jerks” and criticized coach Rod Brind’Amour, who he called a “straight shooter” and captain Justin Williams for letting it go on.

About the only thing Cherry got right was when he said, “This is the National Hockey League.” The rest was nonsense. To each their own. On with the show.

If a Canadian-based team did this Don would think it’s the greatest thing ever.

Time to put your xenophobic hero to bed, Canada

I don’t think so. The whole celebration is very uncanadian in my opinion.

Maybe cherry is, too, but that’s a whole other story.

I don’t think there’s anything particularly exciting let alone
compelling about these celebrations. Not sure how I’d feel or if I’d have a different opinion if it were the Wings.

But to get upset about it and worse to then keep focusing on it is crazy.
Don Cherry and Brian Burke are at best playing a crotchety old guy routine while seemingly convincing no one.
Let alone anyone involved in these celebrations.

If you don’t like something - just not to your taste - and it doesn’t harm anyone - stop focusing on it!

The celebrations are awesome and creative and I love how it gets the entire crowd involved.  Would I feel differently if it was the Wings, or any other original 6 franchise for that matter? Possibly. But every team has to make it’s own traditions and this one is a lot of fun. Kinda the point of the game eh?

Grapes can keep being sour and fade into obscurity for all I care. His era and everything he stands for is long past and good riddance I say..
