Soon To Be UFA Streit Traded To Philadelphia

06/12/2013 at 1:26pm EDT

from Anthony SanFilippo at the Flyers website,

The Flyers began their offseason re-modeling of the roster by trading for a veteran defenseman Wednesday.

The Flyers shipped a fourth round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft to the New York Islanders for Mark Streit.

Streit, 35, is a pending unrestricted free agent, but the Flyers now own his rights and will have an opportunity to sign him to a new deal before he hits the free agent market July 5 and could sign with any of the 29 other teams in the NHL. He made $4.1 million last season as a member of the Islanders.

“Mark is a player we would have had interest in on July 5th," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "We now have exclusive negotiating rights and we are hopeful that we can get an agreement in place prior to him becoming an unrestricted free agent.”

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired 5-11, 191-lb defenseman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders in exchange for RW Shane Harper and the Flyers’ own fourth-round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Streit, 35 (12/11/77) recorded six goals and 21 assists for 27 points while appearing in all 48 games during the 2012-13 campaign, while also contributing three goals and two assists in six playoff games. He joined the Islanders as a free agent in 2008 and led the team in scoring his first season with 56 points (16G, 40A), while also representing the Islanders at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game. He was named the captain of the Islanders prior to the 2011-12 season.

Streit was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens as a 26-year-old in the ninth round (262nd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with Montreal during the 2005-06 season, appearing in 48 games. With the exception of the 2010-11 season, which Streit missed after suffering an injury in training camp, he has missed just 15 games over the course of seven seasons. He appeared in all 82 games in 2009-10 and 2011-12 and in 81 games in 2007-08, and has also averaged over 23 minutes per game in each of his four seasons of action with the Islanders. Over parts of seven seasons in the NHL with the Islanders and Canadiens, Streit has recorded 65 goals and 223 assists for 288 points in 491 games.

A native of Englisberg, Switzerland, Streit represented his country in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, helping Switzerland to preliminary-round upsets of Canada and the Czech Republic. He has also represented Switzerland 12 times in the IIHF World Championships.

Harper, 24 (2/1/89), signed with the Flyers as a free agent on March 4, 2010. In 143 games with the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, Harper recorded 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points over parts of four seasons.
