from Kerry Fraser of TSN,
We received a number of questions on this play. I attended the game at the Barclays Center and was sitting in the press box just over Carey Price’s right shoulder when the goal was scored. I observed the contact and tweeted out that the goal would likely be contested even before Michel Therrien initiated a coach’s challenge.
I wasn’t able to see a replay (terrible press box facility) but purely based on the actions of the players involved in real time, I thought the contact might ultimately be deemed incidental and Brock Nelson’s goal would stand.
Referee Dean Morton reviewed the play and determined that, based on the degree of contact, the push didn’t sufficiently impair Price’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.
As I watched the play in real-time, like the referee, I didn’t feel the grazing push by Nelson was significant enough to cause Price to lose his set position inside the paint. Instead, my gut told me that Carey attempted to use the contact to his advantage and moved backward in a controlled slide more of his own volition.
If you wantg to review the goal, perhaps for a 2nd or 3rd time, watch it below...
