from Spector at Fox Sports,
The absence of a player transfer agreement between the National Hockey League and the Russian Hockey Federation has resulted in two Russian players under contract with NHL teams signing with a Russian Super League team.
According to reports this week in the Russian media, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky and Boston Bruins forward Stanislav Chistov signed with Salavat Yulaev of the Russian Super League.
Because the Russian Hockey Federation never signed the transfer agreement between the NHL and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), its teams aren’t bound by the same transfer rules governing their nation’s players as other European countries.
continued... Just imagine if a Russian player the caliber of Ovechkin or Datsyuk decided to just pack up and head back home.
