Some Well Known Names Available For The Seattle Kraken

from Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times,

Among the surprise names now available to the Kraken in Wednesday’s NHL expansion draft is Montreal Canadiens netminder Carey Price, the onetime Tri-City Americans junior team standout coming off a stellar playoff performance in which he made the championship round.

Price’s exposure to the draft on a list made public Sunday is one of the more jarring developments and leaves the Kraken with decisions to make. The Kraken, which received the final list Saturday afternoon, must decide whether Price’s salary-cap hit of $10 million for four more seasons is an anchor worth taking on in hopes of a late career resurgence akin to what Vegas got four years ago in plucking veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Other prominent unprotected names the Kraken could be in on include Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, a top-line forward and unrestricted free agent mired in a contract impasse, and Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Dougie Hamilton, another free agent whose protection status had been uncertain after that team allowed him to make preliminary inquires on the open market.

St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko, a former perennial 30-goal-scorer slowed by recent shoulder surgeries and who recently requested a trade from that organization, was also notably left unprotected.

Imagine the starting lineup for the Kraken on opening night…

Landenskog, Taraseno and Johanson, on D Giordano, Zucker and in goal Price.

2nd line would be Johnson,

Johnson, Gourde and Drouin.

Then again, they are now out of cap room!

from the CP at TSN,

Price is the most intriguing possible for Seattle, and the location likely helped convince the soon-to-be 34-year-old to waive his no-movement clause to be exposed. He played for the Western Hockey League’s Tri-Cities Americans a few hours drive away, and his wife, Angela, is from Kennewick, Washington.

That could make Price a natural cornerstone for the Kraken to build around like the Golden Knights did with goalie , who was fresh off winning the Cup with Pittsburgh. Price and the Canadiens lost to Tampa Bay in five games in the final.

The back-to-back champion Lightning have easily the deepest pool of available players. Top-line winger , longtime forward , third-line centre and young defenceman are all exposed. Squeezed by the cap that’s remaining flat at $81.5 million, they could also work out a side deal with the Kraken to take Spokane native and his $5 million price tag for three more seasons.

Seattle has all the leverage and the benefit of cap space.

“The one thing that we think is extremely, extremely valuable in this environment is cap space,” Francis said Saturday. “We’ve got $81.5 million of cap space to play with, so that’s certainly something that we want to make sure we try and take advantage of moving forward.”

I wouldn’t select Gourde. I would select Cal Foote. I still would have cap space to make a secondary trade or claim one of the guys on waivers as something will have to give in Tampa and they will try to waive a player before having to use an asset to unload them.

This way I get 2 Tampa players for the price of 1.

Just putting this out there - Imagine a world where Kraken take Price and Driedger, then flip Price to us for Zadina, Greiss, and a draft pick.  smile

He’ll be 34 yrs old heading into next year that’s heading into the danger zone where goalies play falls off a cliff with no warning. It would be one thing if the Wings were a team in contention for a Cup…but they’re not they are years and years away.

Price also has a no movement clause so he would have to agree to any flip and I don’t think he would.  I think he’s basically happy here but wouldn’t mind closing out his career near family in the northwest.

via TSN,

Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price is scheduled to see a New York doctor this week in regards to a knee issue which could potentially lead to surgery, according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

The hope is that the injury is not too serious, notes LeBrun.

LeBrun also can confirm that Price will have his hip check out as well, but potential surgery is only related to the knee.

Price isn’t going to Seattle (or anywhere). They’d be silly to take him on at this stage of his career with that price tag.

He already waived the NMC for purposes of this draft.

And players can waive NMCs specifically for expansion draft and only for the expansion draft. If he’s picked his NMC is still active and he can squash any moves from Seattle.

I know I know I was just dreaming.

It’s easy to to get kind of punch-drunk when the expansion team is a 2 hour drive away.
