Smyth Not (Can’t) Talking

Smyth took a shot in the mouth from teammate Chris Pronger in the second period of a game that went into a sixth period — and still ended up playing more minutes than every Oilers forward, except Horcoff. “The gash, I was told, was a really bad one,” Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish said, “but by the time I saw him, after he had the medical attention, it looked okay. I couldn't see the teeth missing, so he looked normal on the bench, for having taken a puck in the mouth. It didn't affect his game at all. “The one thing about Ryan is, no matter what the circumstances, he'll never back off. That's why he gets so much out of his game — because he's got that level of competitiveness.”
