The Wings have won six straight games on the strength of their defensive play, which has limited opponents during that stretch to an average of 1.67 goals and 21.2 shots. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom said an overall effort in the defensive zone is key to the streak, which has included wins against San Jose and Dallas. "We're back-checking real hard, not giving them any chances to turn up or hit the late guy, and being in shooting lanes, too," Lidstrom said after Saturday's 4-1 victory. "Whenever they have the puck in our end, we have five guys in tight. We might give them the outside, but not give them the clear shot."
Continue reading A little bit more evidence: Of the 21 goalies who've started at least ten games this year, Dominik Hasek is the only one to face less than 200 shots (198). Mikka Kiprusoff, with two more starts, has faced 170 more shots.
