Simmons Was Doing His Job

from Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun,

Many felt he shouldn’t have the made the trip.

My colleague Steve Simmons shared that opinion. And for writing as much, he’s been branded the lowest form of life ... ever!

Some of the emails and twitter messages Sy received are shockingly vile. And believe me, I know vile. Try taking a shot at Mike Weir sometime.

For questioning Burke’s trip on Free Agent Day, Simmons has been called every bad name imaginable. And some you just could never imagine.

And for what? For doing his job.

For writing what many people were thinking.

That’s the point. He wrote what many people, particularly Leafs fans, were thinking.

This is what journalism has come to? Where’s his scientific poll of what people were thinking? They’re doubling-down on this when a mea culpa is much more appropriate.

Proving, once again, that “many people, particularly Leafs fans,” are dumbasses.

forget it.  simmons is a weasel who physically makes me ill…that fat ass never writes or says anything insightful other than stirring up shit.  buffery, when you actually bring proof that “many people were thinking” what simmons wrote then make that claim, otherwise do me a favour and go away.  much appreciated.

Wow, what a crazy bunch of bullcrap.  Simmons should definitely be apologizing for suggesting that it was a PR trip, and for calling Burke out in the way he did.  He’s completely within his rights to criticize his decision, but the article was not professional, and that’s where some take issue.

And Simmons really took a hard line with that.  He’s right that Burke is one of the best at selling his team and its product, and that’s why he was hired.  But that’s his lone valid, reasonable point amid a whole article of rambling insults, suggesting that Burke was in Afghanistan to boost his own ego and pose for some pictures.  I can’t believe his peer read that article, and decided to defend it like this.  Thats the Sun for you, I guess.

Burke is a blowhard but let’s be honest… those on the inside probably knew Brad Richards was NY-bound two months ago. Simmons should have been able to sniff that out from a mile away. But this little incident/non-incident (call it what you will) is case in point why a player like Richards has zero desire to play in Toronto—it’s not worth the hassle.

This whole thing should be a nonisue. Why the reporter thought it should matter where Burke was physically is beyond me. He wasn’t on vacation so he wasn’t being unprofessional. The man was asked to go do some good will in Afghanistan. By all reports he was in contact with his team. Hell, they could have or might have conferenced him in the meeting. Whats the problem? If Burke physically being in Afghanistan instead of in Toronto was actually a decision point for Richards, then Richards is a douche and Toronto got lucky that he didn’t pick them.

And yet, there’s no lack of Leaf fans who’ve come out and saying Simmons is stupid and wrong.

simmons is a douchebag, never liked him, probably never will.

He makes a living out of slandering people his whole career, lets face it, the sun is a tabloid and that is how he gets his viewers.

So he gets a little criticism and now all of a sudden he can’t take it.  what a blowhard.

The right to criticize comes with the right to be criticized. Personally,  I think it is a topic worthy of discussion and I agree the discourse does not need to be vile and filled with invective, but those in glass houses….

The key point is that the article is not a piece of journalism since it was not objective.  IF you want to present your opinion be prepared for the backlash, just as much as you would be grateful for any praise you may receive.

There is plenty of material to criticize Burke about already, I think where he was physically on free agent day made no difference.

What a sad, un-fulfilling job he must have, then.
