Sidney Crosby Not Included On A ‘Dominant’ List From ESPN The Magazine

from Rob Rossi at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

A hockey player isn't among the 20 athletes designated as dominant during ESPN The Magazine's 20-year run . This should surprise nobody....

To be fair, were there more fans of the NHL in America, ESPN probably wouldn't mostly treat the NHL as simply a league to which it is obligated to pay a smattering of attention. Of course, if ESPN did pay more attention to the NHL, the league probably would draw in a bigger American audience.

Who cares, right?

Well, you should care. If you're a fan of the Penguins or Sidney Crosby or a Penguins fan because of Crosby, you should care at least a little.

They also did teams:

9. 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings (NHL)
Keating’s score: 1.64
Key stat: Recorded a plus-31 goal differential in the 2008 playoffs, the best by any team since the 1995 Devils (plus-33; also won the Stanley Cup).

Keating’s take: This was the fourth and final championship club of the rosters Detroit started building in the late ‘90s around the then-revolutionary idea of maximizing puck possession. These Red Wings outshot their opponents in a ridiculous 70 of 82 games—and outscored them by 73 goals in the season.

FWIW, the 13-14 Blackhawks were 3rd or 4th? those are the only hockey teams iirc.

Nobody.

It’s ESPN. Why would any hockey fan care about anything ESPN has to say?

It is kind of hard to not put Crosby on this list, but then they put Tom Brady last. The same Brady who has more championsips, more playoff MVPs, more regular season MVPS.

It’s hard to imagine, but I probably hate the Patriots and Tom Brady more than Crosby/Penguins. But if Tom Brady is dead last on the list, Crosby falls short.

For a network that has a difficult time separating college basketball from slavery, I’d say I couldn’t care less about their opinion on anything.

I can’t stand Brady and I’m not exactly a fan of Crosby but if neither are on a “most dominant athlete” of last 20 years, I won’t even bother to look at that list.

Then again, I rarely turn to ESPN and I never visit their web site unless someone points out an interesting article.

I actually like how ESPn do the NHL standings on their website (less whitewashing, ie, they put an “e” by teams that have been eliminated). And they do a great job of covering grand slam tennis. But yea, going to ESPN for hockey is like going to McDonalds for nutrition.

Well, I calculated Crosby’s Dominance Rating and it only comes out to 2.1*10x34.  JOKES ON HIM.

I always liked how their “scoreboard” section worked (desktop only) on ESPN. It’s more compact and still shows pretty much all of the relevant information.

I’m surprised they didn’t go with Impact Factor (TM) instead of Dominance Rating.  IF is adjusted for the numbers of issues of the Sports Illustrated for Kids each athlete would be in if it still existed.  not just the length of time ESPN The Magazine has existed.  At this point, Crosby would have to score 4,358 goals in the playoffs to out dominate Jimmie Johnson.  And they say it can’t be done.

I am taking the time to comment solely because I can’t stand watching ESPN,
don’t bother with cable anymore and almost immediately lose interest
somewhere else where it is playing.

Who wants to watch blabber-mouthed self-important sports anchor
“personalities” who try to take on all kinds of issues they actually know little about and who can’t even represent a point of view effectively (whether you agree or disagree).

Little that they cover interests me. And what they cover is
endless hype and oversaturation.

Why would their thoughts on a sport they mostly ignore even matter?
