Sidney Crosby Is Not Perfect

from Barry Rozner of the Chicago Daily-Herald,

Sidney Crosby can do no wrong. Ever.

It's hockey blasphemy for a fan to say anything bad about the league's reigning superstar, and it's certainly unacceptable for anyone commenting about the game to question Crosby's character, style or, well, anything for that matter.

Can't be done.

Except, it should be. Crosby is a dirty player, he's a diver and he's a whiner.

He's also supremely talented and a certain Hall of Famer. The Pens are back in the Final because of him.

His ability puts him among the best of all time, but the way he behaves is utterly unbecoming of someone considered a top 20 player all time. By the time he's done, he might be top 10.

Yet, some of us think of Crosby and think of the unpleasant.

He's always been the embellishing type, and Jonathan Toews was none too pleased when Crosby was flopping around on the ice like a fish during the game at Soldier Field in 2014.

The bigger whiner(s): Sidney Crosby or all the tiny little children who whine about every single thing Sidney Crosby does.

Except that its done all the time, by anyone who watches him play, players tend to talk on the ice vs. off.

What’s the point of this article? Did the NHL really make a statement about something Cindy did or didn’t do?

You don’t get a reputation of squeaky clean when you have a history of going after testicles, diving, embellishing etc.

Haha I’ll offer that he had the misfortune of playing for two coaches that constantly looked like they’d soiled their depends on the bench every time something went the wrong way for the Pens so Crosby had to do the barking himself!  Also, the Ray Shero era Penguins were incredibly soft.  The team toughness was about as low as you can imagine a team of that caliber being.  They chose to employ matt Cooke to do ALL the dirty work.  Crosby has basically had to stand up for himself for a decade because nobody on that team cared.

The diver thing?  I don’t know.  Maybe early on against the flyers but it didnt matter because he owned those jobbers anyway.  There’s plenty of guys that factually have drawn more calls than him.  Anyone like him is going to draw calls, but I don’t know if he necessarily dives.

Dirty?  Oh hell yes.  In a league where every man stands alone these days, he certainly takes matters into his own hands and into another man’s nards.

Or those who whine about those who whine when he whines.

(shouldn’t hockey writers be talking about hockey during the Stanley Cup finals?)

I got a kick out of this.  Good on Rozner to have the sticks to put this on paper.  For the most part, everyone who complains about 87 is either writing in the comments section in a blog or Eugene Melnyk (which doesn’t really mean much at this point).

When you stab a guy in the groin/testicles and chop off part of another guy’s finger with a slash, you don’t get to be called anything but “dirty” anymore.

Before this season, I would not have been willing to go as far as to say he’s dirty.  But man, he more than eclipsed that this season.

The NHL reminds me of the WWE.  The WWE often tries so hard to get a Face “over” and so often the audience just won’t have it.  That’s the NHL and Crosby.  The NHL has always wanted fans to glorify and worship Crosby like they have guys like Gretzky.  But the fans aren’t having it.  And rather than taking the hint and moving on, the NHL just keeps doubling down on Crosby.

Crosby is basically John Cena, is what I’m saying.

Move on to what? I mean, boohoo, the best player plays dirty and is still the best player.  Who cares?  From a marketing standpoint who are you picking next in line?

Ovechkin - nah and I think people are just worn out on his tired story
McDavid - someday maybe
Matthews - someday maybe
Toews - not even the best player on his own team
Kane - off ice issues
Burns - haha

Even if you take a way his dirty play he’s a horrible superstar because his best attributes are so subtle and he has about one highlight reel play for a guy like Ovechkin’s ten.  But, straight up, the NHL can shove the Flyers vs Rangers down your throat 6 times a season on Wednesday night “Rivalry” night and nobody cares, or San Jose vs LA and nobody cares.  Heel or not, your options are limited in the NHL by the nature of the game.

Before this season, I would not have been willing to go as far as to say he’s dirty.  But man, he more than eclipsed that this season.

I agree.  Some people hate it, but he’s pretty much went nuclear this season and decided he’s gonna dominate the score sheet and your nards.  Which, that used to be old time hockey.  Ain’t winnin’ the lady byng any time soon.

All of them together? Marketing doesn’t have to be done one by one, ok?

Which, that used to be old time hockey.

A lot of what people consider “old time hockey” is getting outdated, so not the best model to follow.

(and by the way, I’m not exposed to NHL marketing like you guys are, but that doesn’t stop me from not liking the guy, so I’m not exactly sure that’s the reason so many people in hockey don’t like him)

Nice headline, Paul. Really sums it up.

Crosby is head and shoulders above the rest in many ways. But he’s not a lady byng guy and like all other big stars he uses his position to lobby the refs. No different than Karlsson or Doughty or Iggy when he was one of the best in the game, they all beak at the refs one way or another.

It’s good to see articles like this.

Why does there need to be someone else in line?

That’s the whole problem.  If there is another Gretzky or Howe, fans will know it.  Fans won’t need to be beaten over the head with it.  If you need to do that, then you’re stretching, and fans will know and see it for what it is, and hate you for it.

The NHL tried to push Crosby through that way, and it hasn;t worked.  Not even with casual sports fans.  They take one look at him playing and are bored.

The NHL is just not the NBA.

I agree.  Some people hate it, but he’s pretty much went nuclear this season and decided he’s gonna dominate the score sheet and your nards.  Which, that used to be old time hockey.  Ain’t winnin’ the lady byng any time soon.

But it’s NOT old-time hockey right now.  And that’s the problem.

And if he wants to do crap like that, he can’t then whine to the refs and dive all the time, unless he wants to embrace a true heel turn.

I’ve hated Crosby since the 2009 Finals when the league was doing everything they could to get him a title against the Wings.

Tin foil hat not needed, all of this happened.

Datsyuk and Lidstrom were hurt the previous series.  NHL moved game 1 up on the calendar.  Would this happen if Crosby was hurt?  HELL NO!

Malkin was given an automatic suspension for gooning it up by instigating a fight in the last 2 minutes of a game.  RESCINDED the next day.  Automatic apparently not automatic.

Penguins played with 6 skaters and a goalie for a full 30 seconds plus.  Not called.

Numerous other shaky calls by refs.
