Shutdown The NHL For Six Weeks For An International Tournament

from Mike Imrem of the Chicago Daily-Herald,

The league always is looking for a way to make January and February relevant, a series of outdoor games being the latest concoction.

Here’s the solution: Bah-bah, Olympics, bye-bye.

Then set aside six weeks in the dead of winter and make the break more useful by annually or every couple of years playing an Olympic-style tournament in cities around North America.

The first week would be to gather players for practice. The final week would give them an opportunity to unwind.

The middle four weeks would feature a compelling international tournament at home.

Players who want to represent their native lands — though not enough to enlist in the military, by the way — still would be able to wave their flags.

Fans in places like Chicago who are addicted to attending hockey games would get rivalries like U.S.-Canada instead of Blackhawks-Blues.

NHL owners would lose revenue from maybe a dozen fewer regular-season games but get it back in more lucrative TV contracts and bloated ticket prices for the tournament.

This idea is so stupid, I hope Bettman doesn’t hear about it.

So…

in order to lessen the absolute horrible-ness of Olympic hockey the idea is to make it an annual event, which lasts for three times as long, and has no tradition.

geez… it must be harder to think up a topic for a column than I ever imagined.

Joining in, can you imagine the European nations saying, sure, we are in, when do we start?

A more realistic idea would be to have some sort of NHL/KHL Showcase over a two week span.  Do it every two years but skip olympic years, allowing the NHL to still hold an all star game every other year.  You could alternate locations between Russia and the U.S.

However this would never happen because the NHL tries its best not to recognize the KHL as a legitimate league..

I think it’s more than the NHL that doesn’t recognize the KHL as a legitimate league ...

Now if the KHL wants to showcase their players against the AHL you’d have a better game and viewing experience on your hands.

A better idea would be to shut down the league for six weeks and have the NHL players compete in a curling tournament.
