Should Toews Sit The Rest Of The Season?

from Barry Rozner of the Chicago Daily-Herald,

It’s a question no one wants to ponder, but it’s one that has to be asked:

Should the Blackhawks consider shutting down Jonathan Toews for the rest of the season?

If you know anything about Toews, you also know his answer would be, “Not a chance.”

But Toews has already missed five games, having played perhaps as many as six games with a suspected concussion.

His last game was 10 days ago and his symptoms have not subsided to the point where he can skate. Toews did some off-ice training Wednesday, riding the stationary bike, but that can mean very little when it comes to recovering from a concussion.

“He was doing a little bit of that (off-ice training) today,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Wednesday. “Today is no change from (Tuesday). Hopefully he can get going and we can get him back on the ice.”

If he plays again with concussion, he could end his career. It’s much better for Chicago to sit him until absolutely certain he is symptoms free.

This is the first I’m hearing of a concussion for Toews. Has anyone said when it happened? I think the game against Detroit was the first game he missed so it had to be before then I’d think.

I think Toews injury was a compilation of hits and punches.  He missed some time 2 years ago when Willie Mitchell put him into next week with a huge center ice hit.  He was punched real hard by Thornton of San Jose on Feb. 10th that a lot of people suspect may have been the trigger.

Why sit him the rest of the season? Why even discuss it?

Toews should sit as long as he needs to in order to be healthy enough to play. Hopefully for Chicago (and fans of good playoff hockey), that doesn’t mean October.
