Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,
Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier took the cautious route in negotiations with defenceman Josh Gorges, and it might prove costly in the long run.
Gauthier was unwilling to provide Gorges with a multi-year contract, and the two sides avoided arbitration when Gorges agreed to a one-year deal at $2.5 million US.
Gorges said money wasn’t a factor in the negotiations and, in fact, you can make an argument that the player accepted a hometown discount….
But the big question facing Gauthier is: Will the Canadiens be able to sign Gorges next July when he is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent? Or would the Canadiens have been better locking him up with a four-year deal in the $12-million range?
