Devils radio color analyst Sherry Ross became the first woman broadcaster to provide play-by-play for a full 60-minute NHL game in English during tonight’s 3-1 Devils’ win over Ottawa on WFAN-660 AM.
Ross filled in for Matt Loughlin, who missed the game because the death of his father in law. She did the play-by-play for one period during a 1993-94 game in Washington. Gary Thorne, the Devils’ TV play-by-play announcer at the time, was late arriving because of travel problems so Chris Moore shifted from radio to TV and Ross did the play-by-play on the radio for the first period.
This was the first time she did the full game as the play-by-play announcer, though. Former Devil Rob Skrlac filled in as the color analyst.
