Sharks Sign Gomez

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed unrestricted free agent center Scott Gomez to a one-year deal. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gomez, 33, posted 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 38 games with Montreal in 2011-12. This season, he spent 11 games with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL this season recording 13 points (six goals, seven assists).

I think it’s worth it, especially for that price. Adds a bit more potential scoring power to the Sharks. Good fit for the third or fourth lines.

Not sure if I agree that this is a good move, but it’s definitely low risk. I just don’t see where you slot him into that, or any NHL, line-up. He doesn’t produce enough offense to be on the top two lines, and his game isn’t well suited for the bottom top lines, where typically you’d want a checking forward or a big body.

He’ll play third line center replacing Handzus whose been a stiff the first two games. $700 K is chicken feed compared to what he was making in Montreal. Good signing

And it’s only a year so if it doesn’t work, it’s not really risky. And I think he could be good on the third line. Joe Pavelski is pretty small and when he was on that third line a couple years ago, it really worked out well. We’ll see.
