Shane Doan Finally Gets To The Second Round

from the CP at The Hockey News,

And now that Doan has tasted playoff success, he wants more.

“Everyone always talks about if you get out of the first round, anything can happen,” Doan said. “Now we’ve got to find a way to win that next round and that’s really our next goal.”

As special as it was for Doan to get to the second round, those around him may have been more excited than he was.

Doan has been the consummate captain for the Coyotes, leading by example—he’s almost always the last player off the ice at practice, even optional skates—and by speaking up when it’s needed, either with words of encouragement or to light a spark under teammates.

Sure, he gets razzed all the time for Yosemite Sam-like bursts of anger—deeply religious, he doesn’t curse—and his aw-shucks nature, but everyone within the franchise respects him, the way he plays the game and the way he lives his life.

So when Doan flashed that face-engulfing smile after the win over the Blackhawks, the joy of accomplishment spread across the team.

“For a guy like Shane Doan to not get past the first round, that tells you how hard it is,” Coyotes goalie Mike Smith said after Game 6.

And now the Shane Doan cheap shots will reach new levels.  All broadcasters will justify said cheap shots because:  “That’s how Shane Doan plays”; “the compete level of Doan is through the roof”; “thats how bad doan wants to win”; or “that’s just a Canadian captain playing the game the right way.”

Don’t forget how much of a respectful player he is.

Does anybody really care about Shane Doan?  It’s sad how the west is so lame right now that the lead story is Shane Doan.

Doan’s actually my favorite player, yeah, I care. He’ll make a dirty play here or there, but good god would I LOVE him on the Wings.  Just what they need.  And not a respectful player?  He jumped over a prone Jimmy Howard instead of plowing into him. The result, Howard uninjured, Doan out of the playoffs… just sayin

My only problem with Doan when they played Detroit the past two years was he ran around recklessly. I don’t think he’s a dirty player, but I do think he cut loose too much in the playoffs. It was like he heard all these stories about how crazy and intense the playoffs were and when he finally got there he went a little nuts. Act like you been there before, you know? He did miss Howard and paid a price or it, but he also boarded several guys and took Franzen out.

He seems to be under control this year. I live in Phoenix so I am definitely rooting for them… But not very hard. Go coyotes, howl.
