Shane Doan’s Playing Career Done In Arizona

via Pierre LeBrun tweets,

The Arizona Coyotes are parting ways with long time captain Shane Doan. The club informed him over the weekend.

Doan hasn't decided on his playing future yet. There are other teams I believe who have some interest in him.

Obviously must be a tough pill to swallow for Doan, classy leader, played for one organization his whole career

I would expect the team to offer him a job in the organization one day after his playing career is over

added 3:47pm, Arizona statement below...

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Arizona Coyotes Owner, Chairman and Governor Andrew Barroway issued the following statement today regarding Shane Doan.

"After serious consideration, we have decided to not offer Shane Doan a contract for the upcoming season. The time has come for us to move on and to focus on our young, talented group of players and our very bright future. This was a very difficult decision given what Shane has done for the Coyotes and his unparalleled importance to the organization. With that said, this is necessary to move us forward as a franchise.

"On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to sincerely thank Shane for everything he's done for the Coyotes on and off the ice the past 21 years. Shane is a Valley icon who had an incredible career and was one of the best captains to ever play in the NHL.

"Shane deserves an enormous amount of credit for keeping the Coyotes in the Valley and for growing the game of hockey in Arizona. He is beloved by our fans, corporate partners and the media and has been a tremendous leader for us in the community, and a great role model for kids. We wish him and his family all the best in the future. He will be a member of our Pack forever."

It’s the right move for the franchise, though having a vet like him could certainly help all the kids develop.

I know he had no intentions of leaving Phoenix years ago when he signed his 5 year (?) contract with them, but I wonder if he regrets it now.  He could still sign on a team like Mtl for cheap and have a chance at a Cup, but his chances are really low at this age.

I don’t even know if there’s a demand for him and his game at this point.

Truthfully, I can’t see a contender picking him up for the whole year. He might be better staying in shape and signing, and that is a big if, as late as possible which I think would be December.

I think some team will sign him, and I think he’ll give it some good thought but pass just so he can retire as a Coyote.

He was putting up decent numbers until this past year, really.  28 goals in 15/16 is not too shabby for a guy on that team in his age.

Would Vegas take a flyer actually, now that I think about it?  One year, just to have a Name on the roster?

It makes tons of sense on both sides really.

Vegas gets a Name, a veteran presence for the locker room, a moderate amount of production, an asset to flip at the deadline, and a somewhat expensive contract to help them hit the cap floor.

Doan gets to keep playing hockey, stay relatively close to home, and get his probably last chance at a cup when he gets traded to a contender at the deadline.

Biggest hurdle I can see is if he wants to maintain his single franchise legacy, or decides the 5 hours between Vegas and Phoenix is too much.
