Detroit Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan and Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo were named the NHL's offensive and defensive players of the week Monday. Shanahan collected two goals and seven assists while leading Detroit to a 2-1-1 mark, earning points in each contest. His best effort came last Tuesday, when he recorded a goal and four assists during a 7-6 loss to Atlanta. Teammate Pavel Datsyuk (four goals, four assists) and Panthers winger Nathan Horton (five goals, one assist) were the runners-up. Luongo claimed the defensive honours after leading the Panthers to a 3-1 mark record with a 2.25 goals-against average and .942 save percentage. He stopped 147 of 156 shots during the week, including an astonishing 53 saves in a 3-2 win Sunday over Washington. Martin Biron of the Buffalo Sabres (3-0-0, 2.98 GAA), Martin Gerber of the Carolina Hurricanes (3-0-0, 1.67 GAA) and Michael Garnett of the Atlanta Thrashers (3-0-0, 2.92 GAA) were runners-up.
