CapGeek is stating $5.5 mil cap hit, w/ front loaded contract - $12 mil being paid in the first year (2012)! What did this guy do again? When the league starts to pay on potential, it’s going to have the same CBA woes as the NBA.

Smart contract for Buffalo. They lock up Myers up long-term for a reasonable cap hit (reasonable for the position and his ability) and the structure of the contract makes it easy to trade in later years if they want to get out of it. The guy is just a unique combination of size, skating ability, offensive capability and good defense, and if he continues to add the grit and extra muscle that he showed last season, there’s no telling where his potential tops out. Could be better than Chara shortly, particularly given that Myers is a far better skater, and who wouldn’t take Chara at 5.5 a season?

As a general point, I would agree with you, but Myers isn’t just some guy who has done nothing. Trying to say he’s the best defenseman in the league right now is one thing, saying $5 million annually is way too much (especially considering what other defensemen are making this summer) is another.

I mean, he’s been a legit top-pairing defenseman since he was a rookie and he’s a mobile 6’8 blueliner who’s way ahead of where Chara was at his age. By my calculations, Myers can’t be argued to be any higher than 5th on the list of ‘most-overpaid guys on Buffallo.’ This is a team that pays a slightly better Thomas holmstrom $7 million per,  another guy whose best skill is that he’s right-handed and on the powerplay $5 million and an old, physical defenseman with lead in his skates $4 million.
