The Senators could conceivably lose money during this regular season in operating costs, but would likely reap profits on the arena side of the ledger. The rise in franchise value is significant, but not something that is going to show up in the operating balance. In other words, it depends how you slice it. Melnyk's Senators pay rent on an arena he owns, which means money goes from one pocket to the other. Each playoff gate will be worth at least $1 million to the club. If it loses a few million in operating costs during the year, a decent playoff run will erase it. Are the Senators in financial trouble? Not a chance. The club has never been better positioned in a league that hasn't been this healthy. In a pinch, a billionaire owner could cut a cheque. But don't spread that around. The Senators love their image as a plucky, small market underdog whupping the big boys.more
