So the Isles managed to bring back their big three forward UFAs -
and replaced Lehner with Varlamov.

At twice the term they supposedly offered the former.

Is Varlamov a better goalie or a safer bet on that term than Lehner?

I’d say no and no.

It does look like teams are taking a one or two years at a time approach to Lehner.

But this looks like arguably both too much money and term for Varlamov.

Last year: Grubauer > Varlamov; Lehner > Greiss

(Not that Greiss was too shabby)

But it kind of looks like Lou took a lesser goalie and gave him more term anyway.
