Semin Staying In Carolina

added 6:19pm,

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with left wing Alexander Semin on a five-year contract extension. The deal will pay Semin $7 million per season through 2017-18.

“We’re very happy to retain Alex,” said Rutherford. “Alex is an elite player and has been a major contributor to the Hurricanes having a very strong top line.”

I really liked Semin at $7M for 1 year, but for 5 years with a diminishing cap?  No, thanks.

wow.  talk about a soon to be unmovable contract.  One quick playoff appearance and these guys are going to realize what they just bought.

I don’t know, Eric Staal’s one of the best Captains in the league.  I don’t know Semin can get away with bringing the same personality to the locker room that Ovi let him bring.

Jury’s out for me on this one, but it’s definitely a serious commitment.

right? my first thought was, “aaaaaaand cue the coasting!”

maybe we’re all wrong, but does anyone really think there won’t be more negative stories about semin in 5+ years?

Yet Rick Nash is a Golden Boy.

By the headline, I thought it was a 5 year deal with $7m total. I thought it was an outstanding deal. Maybe Rutherford was similarly confused?

Enh, I think you’re strawmanning that, but at least Rick Nash showed up every year for a terrible, awful, no-good team in Columbus and produced.

On top of being a dude of questionable fortitude when he’s on the ice, Semin misses a lot of games.  He’s never played more than 77 and has had seasons of 62, 63 and 65 games recently.  Which is probably part of the questionable fortitude issue as well.
