- Keep hearing that San Jose will deal Antti Niemi before the trade deadline and have a different approach in goal heading into the playoffs.

- No succession plans have been announced in Ottawa for the eventual replacement of Bryan Murray but word around is that fired Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero has the inside track here.

- Department of bad ideas: The American Hockey League in California.

- The Todd McLellan Watch has begun around the National Hockey League.

And there is a lineup of teams — including the Maple Leafs — interested to see what becomes of the coach of the San Jose Sharks.

McLellan and general manger Doug Wilson haven’t exactly seen eye to eye with the Sharks and the suspicion is this is likely his last season in San Jose.

But if he wants, he won’t be out of work for long....
