from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
- I see where Chuck Fletcher has given Minnesota coach Mike Yeo an early season vote of confidence, which is nice. Except you have to wonder what Wild owner Craig Leopold is thinking of his hockey team after spending all that money and getting less than ordinary results.
- George McPhee is shoveling it pretty well these days, attributing the terrible start of his Washington Capitals to bad penalties and weak goaltending. But he knows better than that.
The GM on the hot seat has to know his team lacks structure on the ice, gives the puck away way too often in bad places, runs around in its own end without a sense of defensive-zone coverage, and frankly, looks like there is some kind of disconnect between first year coach Adam Oates and his players.
McPhee has been careful not to question Oates in public but it’s clear the Caps are in need of a way to play to succeed. They found it in last year’s playoffs with Dale Hunter.
The freeing up of the players, under Oates, has been something of a disaster to date.

I think the Leafs should trade Kessel and he should also ask for a trade. He will never be respected in Toronto, even if he scored 100 goals a season. That goes for any American trying to succeed in a Canadian market. I would never encourage any American above that of a role player to suit up north of the border. No matter how good you are, you will be questioned, second guessed, minimized and at worst mocked. Why would anyone in their right mind ask for that treatment. At best an American can be accepted, but only if they are very good and very consistent. It isn’t worth it and it will actually reduce your market value. Move on Kessel, move on!!!
