Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,
Plenty of Ryan Suter talk last week on Hotstove, but here’s the gist: Bonus money will probably be a huge factor, because it will not be affected by a potential labour stoppage or salary rollback. In the first two years of Brad Richards’ contract, 75 per cent of the $24 million US owed him is in bonuses. It’s $13 million (of $18 million) for Christian Ehrhoff. The bonuses may be as important as the average annual value. Can that type of structure work for the Predators?
There’s a lot of flexibility in making a long-term deal for Suter, because he is 27. Under the current CBA, the league’s annoyance level usually rises when it takes the player past 40.
It’s not exactly a secret that Detroit and Minnesota are among Suter’s biggest suitors. Wonder if Chicago is one of the stealth players here, with an idea of who it might trade should it actually land this big fish.
I’m a big Suter fan. Here are two questions, though, that might be asked by an interested team: First, anywhere he goes, he’ll become a focal point. That’s what happens when you’re the free-agent target getting the big deal. If he stays in Nashville, there’s a comfort zone in place. If he goes elsewhere, will he have any difficulty with the added attention and expectation? Second, he’s stayed between 37 and 46 points during the past four seasons. Does splitting with Shea Weber affect that?
more points plus some Patrick Kane talk…
