Ryan Smyth With Five For An Elbow And A Game

Does he get any more punishment for this elbow on Chris Kunitz?

All I know, Smyth almost cost his team at least a point.  The Oilers had tied the game midway in the third penalty, then Smyth takes this major which put the Penguins on the PP for the rest of the 3rd and about 30 seconds into OT.

The Oilers hung-on and won the game in the shootout.

So it’s a penalty if a guy throws his head at your elbow?

No suspension necessary….He was defending himself and took out a ‘Guin in the process.  Fine with me…

Smyth doesn’t need to get his elbow up to take a check. I don’t think he needs a suspension but perhaps Shannahan could sit down and chat with him about other options for taking a check.

1 game, defending himself doesn’t mean a shot to the head. Needs to learn, suspension is how you learn.

Stupidity is no longer a viable defense in the NHL.  This will cost him significant money and a suspension.  I don;t know if he a a repeater or not.  If not, 2 games if a repeater, Shanahan will show no mercy.

I agree with a game, but it does bring up an important part of this conversation—another way to police some of the violent hits in the game is to allow players to defend themselves. Obviously there is a line… you can’t take advantage of “protecting yourself” and throw your elbow at his dome—but there may be something to be said for being allowed to bring your stick up around shoulder height or something like that.

its funny how we all sit here and watch this stuff every day with the convienace of super slow motion and say things like “no excuse for that in the game, etc…” but these guys are simply reacting while moving extremely fast on a sheet of ice.

I totally agree with this.  If a guy knew he was going to be met with an elbow or stick, he’ll think twice about taking a run at another player.

Depending on whatever his ‘repeat offender status’ is, it’s 2 games if Smyth’s clean, and it’s 5 if he has a history.

You.
Cannot.
Hit.
A.
Guy.
In.
The.
Head.

Smyth took his elbow and plowed it into the approach players head.  Can’t do it.

Yes yes, the Penguin ‘skated into it’.  Doesn’t matter.  Smyth could have very easily ‘defended himself’ by throwing his arms out lower, but didn’t.

Eventually, these NHL players are going to start to get it.  I hope.

So an elbow to the face, dragging his stick across Kunitz’ face, and then slashing him in the face with his stick while he’s laying on the ground, doesn’t deserve suspension? Okay.

Here’s a GIF so you can watch it over and over and try to argue.

In slow motion, Kunitz elbows Smythe after the hit. Obviously, it was momentum carrying him through. The slash was the same, and it looked as if the stick hit the ice more than the player.

I don’t like either player. I don’t have skin in this game. I like the idea of players physically punishing people who hunt and make hits that aren’t to dislodge the puck, but that’s not the rule as it stands right now. I see a fine, but not a suspension.

Gee, I had no idea Smyth had that in him, hates the guins as much as the rest of us….

Shouldn’t Kunitz have let up a bit since Ryan gets rid of the puck?

Looks to me as if Ryan is just reacting in defense in a split second decision, then Kunitz takes that opportunity to fall like a rag doll. And even Kunitz follows through with an elbow of his own.

I didn’t see or watch any of the game but i assumed Kunitz probably played the rest of the game just fine?

Why didn’t Kunitz get called for interference? Looks like the puck was in another time zone by the time the annual Lady Byng nominee tries to take a cheap shot on Smyth.

Kunitz has never been nominated for a lady bing you moron. Just shows your lack of knowledge. The fact that the hit is okay because it is on a penguin player is moronic and is a big reason why the nhl continues to look the other way. The hits are seen as ok by the paying customers.

Finishing your check is one thing, but this finish took him an awful long time…

the late and often second hit on an opponent after the puck has been passed and touched by another player is a big part ok Kunitz’ game.

Chaz Bono has a better chance of getting suspended. A player MUST be able to defend himself.
0 game suspension, and a written apology from Gary for the remote insinuation that there is impropriety here. Shanny is on thin ice for stripping the game of it’s integrity and woosifying the sport like the NFL has done…

...NOW is the time to stand up and say NO MORE. Screw Occupy _______…..I say we march on Toronto and OCCUPY Gary!
