Oiler fans may be squirming a bit with longest-serving Oiler Smyth still not signed, but Lowe said whether it's a short-term or long-term contract, the Banff product will be in Oiler silks when the puck drops Oct. 5 at home against the Colorado Avalanche. "I think there seems to be some mixed messages or misconceptions about Ryan. We'll get Ryan signed, it's just a question of whether he's long-term because next year he becomes an unrestricted free agent," said Lowe. "I guess the worst-case scenario would be if we had to put him on a one-year deal. Not that Ryan needs motivation, but he'd be highly motivated and have a great year, which is good for the Oilers. "But our expectations and hopes are that we can get him a long-term deal, but we'll see what happens. Rest assured he'll play for the Oilers this year."
