Ryan Carter came to training camp without a contract on the faith that the Devils wanted him back for another season and would eventually find room on the roster to sign him.
That has been the indication from general manager Lou Lamoriello all summer and into the fall. But Carter, who never even signed a tryout contract, is losing hope.
“I can’t say that I’m optimistic. I don’t think I can say I’m the opposite, but I can’t say I’m optimistic,” Carter told NJ Advance Media.
The 31-year-old forward has appeared in three preseason games, but so far he hasn’t been offered contract. He is getting to the point where he needs to get some answers.
“I left it alone for a while. We’re obviously running out of time here,” Carter said.
