Russia Wins The Battle With The NHL

by George James Malik

I spotted a familiar author’s name while looking at Sport-Express.ru’s hockey page.  Igor Larin, who’s basically Russia’s Garrioch, Brooks, and Cox combined, wrote an article suggesting that the Russians have “won” the battle to keep their mid-range players from the clutches of the mean and dirty NHL by not signing a transfer agreement, as proven in the draft, and Larin (who’s such a proponent of the Superleague’s superiority to the NHL that it’s not funny) made some more interesting suggestions.

Translation follows…

The draft of NHL which took place in the past weekend in Kolambuse, has designated new realities in world hockey.

by Igor LARIN

102 The Canadian, 63 Americans, 17 Swedes and 9 Russian - are those the basic results of elections of the best juniorov world hockey. For the first time in history the Russian representation has appeared so insignificant - less than ten, and the best junior the countries Alexey Tcherepanov, which else in the winter transatlantic rating bureaues named an obvious favorite, has failed on 17-th position.

It seems, it is a high time to tear on itself hair and to shout about the deep crisis which has captured the Russian hockey, than many, to a word, have already borrowed. Whether here only results kolambusovskoj fairs are so negative for us?

I shall dare to approve, that the draft-2007 in the certain degree can be estimated as triumphal for domestic hockey. That Tcherepanov’s falling on 17 positions, as well as recruitment only nine ours juniorov, - events favourable to a superleague. And the most important, the draft, in my opinion, has proved, that Russia, in the beginning of a century not having signed extortionate transfernyj the contract from NHL, has made strategically true decision which has allowed to win against North American league war for middle class of the hockey players.

Remember, how in 90th years of NHL, having on hands transfernyj the contract, with quiet soul doila the Russian territories, draftuja every year approximately on four ten our hockey players? The Most part from them there and then packed things and sent for ocean, where many in the hockey plan gibli in meat grinders of the lowest leagues. NHL, extorting players, lost nothing - as a last resort the legionary could be sent in ôàðì-club for the cheap salary. And here for domestic hockey it was terrible impact - we lost not only elite, but also an average, vital layer for our league.

Today about any transatlantic “chese” cannot be any more and speeches. The last season when Mihnov, Kajgorodov and Lisin have not wished to travel on the lowest leagues became critical and, having taken advantage of absence of the contract between NHL and Russia, have returned to a superleague. That, lacking the qualified labour, porozhdennyj, by the way, expansionist policy of NHL, was ready to provide with it conditions, considerably the best, than in AHL, and at least comparable to NHL. As a result first two have noticeably strengthened not only our clubs, but also a national combined team where, we shall remind, visible roles were played also by other representatives of the middle class, in due time not wished to act in transatlantic ôàðì-clubs, - Happy, Haritonov, Kondratyev.

Henceforth Russia will not deliver a cheap and implicit labour for ocean. Today it, similar, have understood in NHL where with our players any more do not risk to communicate. From here and antirecord figures of the Russian representation, and Tcherepanov’s falling. Falling which any more does not allow it to count on maximal for the beginner of NHL the million contract and which gives “Avant guarde” serious financial advantages. Now to Tcherepanov will offer in “Rejndzhers” the order of 600 thousand dollars in a year (if to subtract taxes - approximately 300 thousand pure), and, to measures of “Avant guarde”, and also of some other leading commands of a superleague, it is ridiculous money.

In general events of last years show us, that against a breakage under the name of NHL there are receptions. With this league it is possible to struggle its receptions. We shall tell, the same draft - action rather doubtful, painfully beating under human rights and, as a matter of fact, depriving its option of a place of work. Probably it only in those kinds of sports where there are empires and colonies (in case of with hockey - NHL and IIHF).

Flat refusal from transfernogo contracts with an opportunity following from it at any moment of a season to take away the player of NHL - one of such not the most correct receptions. One more - introduction of an alternative draft on which the Russian clubs would choose to themselves not only Kovalchuka with Ovechkinym, but also Crosby with Lekavale. I believe, that if our league as a whole will develop, instead of to stand on a place (as, alas, in the last season), this idea above which many now will only be dared, becomes quite real.

So let results of a draft are admired, for example, in the Sweden which has outstripped us, 17 best juniorov which have got in servitude and in the near future for indemnification in pair hundreds thousand dollars (it is the salary of the player of the fourth part of ordinary club of a superleague) will direct to Northern America. We, having won from NHL middle class, let’s think of other: how to defend superstars of level Ovechkina and Kovalchuka. It - if we wish to develop - our following problem.
