Just exactly the coach this disorganized team does not need.  Toronto will not get its act together as long a Burke is GM.

Right now, this is a million times better than Wilson.  This is Burke’s head on the line now…

Carlyle may be better than Wilson but he still has to work with a mediocre team.  Toronto is nothing like the team that won Randy the Cup in Anaheim.  I think this is just Burke saving his job.

Burke is officially in trouble! This is desperation and the wolves will now circle on him.

@Matt Fry - I don’t think anyone thinks it is…  but it is a team good enough to make the playoffs (not compete for the cup - yet).  We will soon find out.  The players are in for a shock as Carlyle runs a tight ship - quite a change from old Willy.

Team was going nowhere with Wilson, he did his part.  Remember Burke never hired Wilson, but he did keep him on too long.

Carlyle is a coach who cannot maintain a disciplined squad.  Even when they were winning, Anaheim looked like a rag-tag band of pirates.

Toronto needs a coach who can teach structure to that team.  They have some talent, but it is mis-applied and the players have not got any idea of how to be a team.

Burke may think that this coaching change can save his job, and it might, but ultimately the only thing that will turn Toronto around is different management.

I don’t love Wilson as a coach, but he is not the reason the leafs suck.  People (ahem leaf fans) are blind to the fact that Burke is an idiot.  What talent has he grown for the leafs through the draft?  Kadri? Schenn?  Schenn is arguably a solid defenseman and Kadri is still a developing young player.  But these were 1st rounders.  Who else on the team has he drafted that have developed and benefited the team.  It’s been four years, more than enough time for a few prospects to bloom.  Giving away the picks for Kessel was the worst deal in the world, but Kessel is not a player that makes those around him better.  He is a support-type player who is a top-notch sniper that neglects defense.  Those picks could’ve been very beneficial for the leafs future, notably the Seguin pick who is younger and cheaper than Kessel but already producing as a center.  The teams that are contenders most often are strong at the center position, consider Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Vancouver.  Toronto has virtually no quality centers other than Grabovski to distribute the puck.  Signing Bozak and Hansen didn’t cost much, but the contribution really is all that amazing either.  Other than that Connolly is being paid to continue his doctors visit to the tune of $4 million.  Moreover, Toronto has poor depth at the forward position.  Lupul and Kessel are quality top line wingers, but other than Grabovski providing secondary scoring the offense is pretty thin.  They suck because of this and their goaltending questions.  Ron Wilson had no control over the players he gets, and he didnt have a full deck.  Not his fault.

I`m assuming we don`t talk to the same Leafs fans, but the ones I`m surrounded by in Toronto aren`t very pleased with Burke at all.

You`re right about Wilson not having control over the players, but he`s also the exact wrong kind of coach they need.  He doesn`t know what to do with young players, so he just throws them in the water without swimming lessons.  The Leafs are going to continue to be mediocre for a while because the young talent they have hasn`t been coached well.  Probably the best young guys they have are Kadri and Gardiner, because neither one of them has been coached by Wilson for very long.
