Ron Francis Now The President Of Hockey Operations In Carolina

RALEIGH, NC - Tom Dundon, Owner and Governor of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Ron Francis will transition into a new role with the team as president of hockey operations. The Hurricanes will conduct a full search for a new general manager, who will report directly to Dundon.

"Since I took control of the team, I've had a good chance to be around and assess the operations," said Dundon. "There are a lot of good people working in the organization, but I feel that a change in direction is needed when it comes to hockey personnel decisions.

Ron is a smart and talented hockey man. I am glad that he will continue to be a part of the team, serving in this new role."

John Shannon tweet,

The inside story of the ‘Canes change is that the owner wants to deal directly with the coaches and the players…and have a figure head GM. Dundon wants to do it like Mark Cuban runs the NBA Mavericks.

If that John Shannon tweet is true, that sounds like a miserable place to work.

Some organizations don’t fool around when it’s time to make a change.

Too bad we are not like this.

By the way..  when was the last time a GM got fired in the month of march ??

Do they know that they still have a draft in june. ?..

As a part time canes fan (I live in Raleigh) this is sooooo bad. The canes are on the cusp. Granted we weren’t sure they’d ever get there under Francis but now we have a guy making our decisions who knows nothing about the sport.

And…they should keep the GM they’re unhappy with until after the draft?

This is exactly what a team doesn’t need. An owner making team management decisions. Just about every time it has been done, across sports, it has been a failure. You want people who know the sport best running the team.
