It has been years coming, but it has finally happened. The Edmonton Oilers’ (second) first round draft pick in 2004, and ex-prospect Robbie Schremp has packed his bags for Europe. Schremp will be playing for MODO of the Swedish Elite League.

After several years of Oilers’ fans calling for a Schremp call-up the Oilers placed the centreman on waivers in 2009, where he was picked up by the New York Islanders. Schremp played nearly two seasons with the Islanders, but netted only a small number of goals and points. Next the Atlanta Trashers picked Schremp off of waivers on trade deadline day of 2011. The Winnipeg Jets however, did not see enough in Schremp to extend him a qualifying offer.
There is no doubt that Schremp and his agent looked for another NHL team for the 2011-2012 season, but the signing in the SEL indicates that there may not have been many, if any offers.
There were many Oilers fans who felt that perhaps Craig MacTavish and the rest of the Oilers coaching staff were unwilling to give Schremp a chance to crack the Oilers lineup, and I fear I was one of them. Through the years however, it appears as though Schremp may have had more issues than fans were able to see. After all, it was due to youtube that most fans were able to see any of Schremp’s skills.
This is of course an opportunity for Schremp to make a name for himself in the SEL and perhaps one day make a return to the NHL. After 124 games in the NHL over 5 years, it doesn’t seem as though that is meant to be. For many Oilers fans, this is another disappointing storyline of a first round draft pick. Thankfully, the recent first round picks seem to fare much better. All hail the “Magnificent Bastard” Stu MacGregor and his amateur scouting staff.
