Rick DiPietro Removed From the Injured Reserve List

via the New York Islanders,

The New York Islanders announced today that goaltender Rick DiPietro has been removed from injured reserve.

DiPietro, 30, had been sidelined since Dec. 3, 2011, first with a groin strain and then with a sports hernia and knee swelling. The Winthrop, MA, native appeared in eight games last season, posting a 3-2-3 record.

The Islanders selected DiPietro with the first overall pick in the 2000 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In 315 career NHL games, he has a 130-133-8-28 (W-L-T-OT) record with a 2.86 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. DiPietro was named an NHL All-Star in 2008 and started in goal for the Eastern Conference.

On the international stage, DiPietro has represented the United States at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, the 2004 World Cup, the 2005 and 2001 World Championships and the 2001, 2000 and 1999 World Junior Championships.

Who wants to start the “how long til DiPietro goes back on IR” pool?

Cap floor ftw!  Also: I wonder if they have to pay players who are on IR during a lockout.

He went 3-2-3 for the friggin’ NYI… that isn’t bad actually I guess.

I don’t quite hate on the guy like some have, and I wonder if 30 is too late for him to get it together and stay healthy.  Some goalies don’t even see the NHL until 30 or later.

Someone needs to make DiPietro to TOR happen.  There is no possible bad outcome there… either DiPietro’d get it together and win… or TOR could have made another very Toronto move and seen it blow up in their faces and everyone else wins!

The Islanders just cleared the path to be able to buy him out under the expected post CBA amnesty

Pretty much what I was thinking. They can actually toss his ass back on IR on day 2 of the season and make the insurance company foot the bill (presuming their doctors find a reason not to clear him). This, of course, SHOULD constitute circumvention, but it doesn’t.

Watch the Islanders not suspend Visnovski for similar reasons ($3 million owed, $7 million cap hit) despite his refusal to report.

Vis has not refused to report, his agent has filed a grievance with the NHLPA to see if Anaheim dealt him while he had a valid no trade clause.

Visnovsky said he wouldn’t be reporting.

Then his agent filed a grievance a couple months later.

No a poorly translated article that came out after the grievance was filed implied he would play in the KHL, but he has stated he would report to the Islanders in a discussion with Snow. The grievance was filed shortly after the trade, but not made public for nearly a month. So the timeline is skewed by comments that came out after the actual grievance was filed, but before it was made public.
