Report- Wings Interested In Nabokov

via Darren Dreger tweet,

Red Wings in discussions with veteran goaltender, Evgeni Nabokov. Deal today? Will have to clear waivers if it gets done.

added 1:08pm, via John Shannon tweet,

Nabokov’s people talking to DRW… Challenge is to construct a contract that will dissuade others from claiming the goaltender on waivers.

added 1:11pm, another tweet from Shannon,

Holland/Meehan are experts at creativity… One consideration is a “no move clause” that forces a claiming team to keep Nabokov long term.

added 1:43pm, via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“We’ve had conversations,” Holland said. “It’s hard to know (if they’re close). We’ll see.”

Asked about what has prompted the Detroit’s interest in Nabokov, Holland said, “Those are more questions for if something does happen – can’t put the cart before the horse.”

The Red Wings apparently are looking for some insurance following Chris Osgood’s surgery on Jan. 11 to repair a sports hernia. Holland said Osgood is on schedule to return in early- to mid-March.

added 2:21pm, A guy named Malik takes over from here.

Nabby will pass through waivers.  Any team that wanted him would have already signed him.

Not necessarily—only the Blues so far have been willing to be the “first mover” on these contracts and have lost both their attempts.  It’s possible no one else has signed him for fear of wasting the effort, and turned their attentions elsewhere.

MacDonald’s a replacement-level goalie; fine for your 3rd guy, who will play in small doses.  But if he’s your #2 in the playoffs, you’re one tweak away from getting early tee times.  I’m certainly not impressed by Nabokov* but it’s definitely worth exploring as an emergency option.

Perhaps Tick - Tock is doing a little mis-direction here ala the Fabian Brunnstrom Ville Leino signing.  If Kenny’s looking at getting Leighton through waivers what better way then to make another team bite on Nabby so the field of claimers is a little smaller.  Just a thought.

With all the cap space they’ve saved through LTIR they could probably overpay Navokov on a one year deal to prevent him from being claimed on wavers.  Teams will be less likely to block the move if they have to pay 3 million or so instead of 500k.
