The Oilers' improbable run to the Stanley Cup finals may ultimately end with the trade of one of the team's biggest contributors: Chris Pronger. According to Sportsnet sources, Chris Pronger wants out. The defenceman is believed to have some personal issues that may be alleviated by a move. Neither the Oilers nor the Pronger camp will comment on the matter with respect to the hulking defenceman's privacy. However, it is believed Pronger made his position clear with Edmonton's management before departing for a vacation Friday morning. Word of his unrest surfaced prior to the playoffs and with it the understanding discussions between Pronger and Kevin Lowe had taken place inseason about the possibility of a trade.continued I was listening to NHL Live this morning and they recevied an email stating that Lowe was on Edmonton radio this morning and said Pronger was not going anywhere. I don't believe they verified the email, then the guys from NHL Live promptly started ripping Al Strachan, for breaking this story a few days ago. update 5:43pm, Spector has been doing some digging on this story... added 6:55pm, via Sportsnet,
As much as Kevin Lowe had some choice words (and terms) for Toronto Sun columnist Al Strachan on Friday, Al has been in the business too long to be the first to report a rumour unless there is substantial smoke to the current fire in Oil Country. And we are finding out just how combustible fossil fuel is. However, the other important factor to consider is the stellar reputation of Kevin Lowe. You will not find a more up-front and honest general manager in the NHL. It’s part of what enabled Kevin to attract Chris Pronger to Edmonton in the first place. Signing Chris to a lengthy five-year deal is further evidence of that. So to speculate on the speculation wouldn't be showing Lowe the respect he deserves as a general manager.added 7:09pm, via TSN,
The Edmonton Oilers are in the midst of what could be a severe shakeup to their roster just days after their Game 7 Stanley Cup Final loss. NHL sources indicate that Oilers' defenceman Chris Pronger has requested a trade from the club.
