Update: Per TSN's Bob McKenzie:
The rumblings regarding Logan Couture being close to a contract extension with the San Jose Sharks have been percolating for a while now, so this should not come as a surprise:
Update: the Mercury News's David Pollak's on the case:
And here's his text report:
Center Logan Couture has agreed to a contract extension with the Sharks, though no formal announcement can come before July 5.
"Can't say details," Couture responded in a text message when asked for specifics after reports circulated that he had agreed to an extension to his current contract that pays him $3 million in 2013-14, its final year. Earlier, Couture did declare over Twitter that Monday was a "Big dayyyyy."
Locking up Couture to a long-term deal was an obvious goal of general manager Doug Wilson. While teams can talk with their players about an extension, none can be approved by the league until a contract is in its final year, which begins next month.
Couture, who will be entering his fifth season with the team, led the Sharks with 21 goals, and his 37 points were second overall in 48 games in the regular season. He added 11 points in 11 playoff games as San Jose advanced to the Western Conference semifinals. In his career, Couture has 167 points in 232 regular season games and 33 points in 49 playoff games.
Comcast SportsNet Bay Area was the first to report the contract extension. Pierre LeBrun of ESPN said that the agreement was expected to be for five or six years.
Update #2: Kevin Kurz states that the deal's going to be a 5-year extension as well.
