Vanek for Franzen. And Tootoo.  And Sammy.  And the Sabres don’t even have to keep any of his salary!

This would solve Detroit’s roster and salary cap issues and it would relieve them of the albatross that Franzen’s contract will become.

And the Sabres could get some crap in return.  Everyone wins.

Garth for GM. If I sound sarcastic, I’m not. That would be a solid deal. I’d even offer a conditional seventh round pick on top.

Vanek for Franzen.

That’s an HFboards-worthy trade suggestion right there.

Sure if you don’t stop to consider BUF’s needs or what they might ACTUALLY want in return, and only the Wings’ side of it.

I know Darcy Regier has gifted Holland some players before (Hasek), but not he is dumb enough to make that deal.

Friedman then tweets..

Saw Darcy Regier told reporters in BUF today trade window is closed for Miller & Vanek right now…interesting. We will see how it unfolds.

My opinion…

What else was Reiger to say, he certainly won’t open up the trade window on the first day of camp.  If the right offer comes along, he will make the move.

Well, I’m n hold with Ken Holland’s office right now to suggest the idea to him.  Are you saying I should just hang up and not bother?

Just to make the money work, you’d have to do something like Franzen, Tootoo, and Eaves. And while both Franzen and Eaves are players that would help the Sabres, you’d still have to include a serious prospect, which probably means someone like Nyquist, Jurco, Pulkkinen, etc.

And that assumes Buffalo even has the appetite to take Franzen’s big contract (even though the cap hit really is quite good).

If you wanted to be real serious, throw a soon healthy Darren Helm into the mix in place of Tootoo and Eaves.

In reality, there are a handful of other teams that A) would love to have Vanek as well, B) have assets that fit as good or better than what the Wings have to offer, and C) are probably more likely to pull the trigger on a deal like this, whereas Holland and Co. have played it very slow and conservative post-lockout.

Complete and utter blasphemy.

I don’t see any way possible the Wings can get Vanek without horribly overpaying.  Offering Franzen, a guy that didn’t play last year because he kept hurting himself, and a regular healthy scratch is kinda’ insulting.  BUF might like Franzen, but would consider the other 2 parts useless (and be correct in their analysis).

And I don’t think Helm is even a tradeable asset at the moment.  Everyone wants to see if he can even play first.

Don’t bother.  He’s going to be too busy making calls trying to trade Tatar and Nyquist so we can get Cleary back.

Although I did watch a prospect game with him this weekend, and he was receptive to the idea of Tootoo, Samuelson, and Eaves for Pietrangelo, so you might have a shot.

While I mostly agree with you, Buffalo does seem to have an affinity for useless players.

Detroit would most likely have to deal Franzen, an NHL ready young player like Nyquist, a high end prospect and possibly a pick.  The Wings might need to throw Eaves or Tootoo in there for cap reasons, but Buffalo would probably ask for at least a pick to take on one of those players.  And I’m pretty sure some team could offer a better deal.

I’m not sure why everyone thinks Buffalo is going to ask for the moon for Vanek.

1) His contract is up at the end of the season, so there’s a very real chance he could be little more than a rental, and
2) The entry we’re all commenting on is one in which people are being told that Buffalo is willing to eat some of his salary in order to trade him.  Sounds like they’re actively trying to get rid of him, to the point in which they’re trying to sweeten the pot.

Reiger has a history of letting potential notable FA’s walk rather than trying to get anything in return.  That’s just kinda’ what he does.  He’s not just going to jump at any offer.  Has nothing to do with asking for the moon.  He just knows exactly what he wants and if he can’t get it, he won’t make the move.  Honestly I think a couple other suggestions of asking price are probably a bit too high from reality as well.  The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Maybe not Franzen and Samuelsson… but Franzen, Abdelkader and Helm?  Maybe we’re starting to get into the right ballpark there with that?

Samuelsson and Tootoo both have very little trade value, everyone.

I don’t consider Reiger to be a particularly-good GM, but he’s not a BAD one either, and it’s important to note the distinction.

Jay Feaster is not GMing in Buffalo though.
