Big contract for Holland and the Wings future.  Halak got 3.25 last summer and Niemi got 2.25m, if the Wings paid more than what Niemi was awarded you have to question it if you’re a Wings fan.

Nice.  Curious about the terms…

Great news. Was worried that, as a UFA, he’d command more like $4 million per. Would be nice if it was three or four years instead, but I guess at such a generous bargain I’m not surprised Howard would want to keep the term a little shorter.

Nice deal, reasonable. As usual, the truth lies somewhere in the middle, so Howard is probably not quite as good as he played at times last season, and he’s certainly not as bad as he’s played in a number of stretches this season.

$2.25 is a good number that keeps the goaltending budget low, where the Wings like it, so they will be able to at least consider their options for retaining the likes of Salei and Ericsson on D, and Eaves and Miller up front.

Obviously, there are other concerns. Kindl looks to be a better long-term prospect than Ericsson, and he has to play top 6 minutes next year. And Brendan Smith looks like the real deal as well, and I think he’s only got one more year of options. So Big Rig might be out anyways, but at least a decent contract for Howard means the option is there for Ken Holland, he doesn’t have to write off re-signing Ericsson and/or Salei for mathematical reasons.

Up front, I think it may be tough to retain Eaves. It will depend on what Eaves wants… someone will be able and willing to give him more than the Wings can, but if he likes being with the Wings, I would think they will at least be in a position to make him a competitive offer, given that Draper’s contract is up (even if he comes back, I have to think it would be at a rate at least $500k - $750k less than his cap hit now), Modano’s is up (and if he got another one-year deal, it would be low and incentive-laden again), and Lidstrom may retire or even take another slight pay cut.

Keep Eaves, wave adieu to Miller, try to trade Big E in the next 2 hours.

Oh…um…what? I think it’s a good extension. Might improve Jimmay’s numbers as he doesn’t have to worry about the contract at the end of the year. Nice job, Tick Tock.

Big E is a forward reworked into the D spot. I could see him in front of the net ala Homer. I like E because he is willing to throw down when indicated. Maybe he should return to being up front.
I’m not as happy as most Wing’s fans are aboot the extension for Howie, but, I have confidence in Tick-Tock.
Also, he is another one that is not afraid to make his tormentors smell the glove. That is his one saving grace. Well that and #of wins. It is the right move for now.

It’s reasonable.  I like it.

Jimmy (a bit over rated) may have given the Wings a bit of a discount, but I think it was a good move on Holland’s part.  Just the confidence from not having an unknown future next year may be just what Howard needs to get the Wings past the first round.

He is not learning from his mistakes.  Either he doesn’t follow instructions or has the IQ if a gnat.  What makes you think that would change if he was moved to forward..?.

Big Error played center until he was 18. He never learned to play D as a youngster, and had only been playing D for about 6 years or so by the time he made the NHL. Maybe he just hasn’t had the kind of foundation necessary for him to really succeed as a defenseman at this level, and would have an easier time adjusting to a Homer-type role?
