Report- Deal Between The Columbus Blue Jackets And Vegas Golden Knights

Here is why deals should be announced when they happen, instead of waiting for the expansion draft on Wednesday.

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,

Sources around the NHL have indicated to The Dispatch that the Blue Jackets have reached agreement with the Vegas Golden Knights on a trade that will be announced during the expansion draft Wednesday in Las Vegas. With this trade the Blue Jackets will pay dearly to dissuade the Golden Knights from taking Anderson, Korpisalo or one of the veteran defensemen — Jack Johnson or David Savard — that they would have exposed.

The Jackets are believed to be trading this year’s first-round draft pick (No. 24 overall) and a prospect (not Pierre-Luc Dubois or Sonny Milano) to Vegas for assurances that the Golden Knights will select either left wing Matt Calvert, center William Karlsson or defenseman Ryan Murray.

Vegas’ acquisition of the contract of injured veteran forward David Clarkson ($5.25 million salary cap hit) may also be part of the deal.

I expect more 'leaks' like this in the next few days.

Vegas sure seems to be getting a raw deal. I guess taking clarkson’s deal is not that big of a burden, and im not sure that Ryan Murray or Karlsson arent good gets still.

But take clarksons contract, the prospect you get isnt one of our top two, and heres our late 1st in a supposedly shallow draft.

Seems like a solid deal to me. Murray definitely still has value and can be a top 4 defenseman, and Karlsson isn’t too shabby either. LV is going to be loaded with picks.

Even a latish #1 pick in a weaker draft plus a solid young and cheap roster player and a prospect is still a pretty high price.

Getting relief from the Clarkson deal is nice, as is getting to effectively expand
their protected list some.

But the league really set up Vegas to potentially extract a lot of assets from the
existing teams. This is just miles away from the last wave of expansion when
acquiring a couple journeyman goalies at the end of their careers and some fading one-dimensional secondary scorers was how teams tried to stay above water in their first years.

I guess Jack Johnson had a better season last year and perhaps he’s
seen as a veteran presence, but potentially walking away from Murray
is a little surprising. That’s a #2 overall pick who has struggled with injuries but]
still has upside. I don’t know if Sonny Milano will make it as a full-time NHL player,
but PLD was the third overall pick. He’s surely their top prospect.

That’s a big price which definitely leads me to believe Clarkson must be part of this deal. The Jackets could really use the cap relief that would come from getting him off the books.

I didn’t look at Columbus’s protect list but those would have been some pretty good assets for Vegas to choose from.
