Report- Brendan Shanahan Set To Join The Toronto Maple Leafs

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

The intriguing concept of Brendan Shanahan joining the Maple Leafs has been rattling around the restless mind of Tim Leiweke for months.

But after an explosion of speculation from a variety of media outlets in the past 48 hours forced the idea to be fast-tracked, that concept is about to turn into reality.

Shanahan, according to multiple sources, will resign his position as the NHL’s director of player safety as early as Friday and immediately join the Leafs this weekend as the team closes out a disappointing season.

While his precise job could not be confirmed, sources suggest the Hall of Fame winger will likely be named president of the Leafs hockey club, not only president of hockey operations.

Who pray tell wants Shanny’s old job with Buttman?

I vote for Pronger.  Definitely Pronger, but if not being able to read is a problem, then maybe Scott Stevens?

I mean… Who knows intent to injure and hits to the head like those guys, eh?

Numerous reports state the Leafs will release a statement on the hiring of Shanahan tomorrow and have a press conference early next week.

“to review: this player has proven little.  While he mouths off cliches often, he plays with little heart.  We must also take into account his lack of history with 30-goal seasons.

The department of player signing has awarded him 6.5 million.”

while I know we endlessly debate whether various plays deserve 3 games or 10 games or whether injury should be factored in or if suspension should be weighted so heavily in the playoffs… but I have to say I really like what Shanny did all in all in his short time as head disciplinarian. Making transparency the priority and therefore, establishing an actual public record, has made all of this debate possible. Perhaps we find inconstancies here and there - and I think that will always be the case since so much of this is a matter of perception and judgment - but it was the right thing to do for the league to put their money where their mouth was. The system before Shanny was absurd. In creating a precedent of public explanations for all supplemental discipline (and even cases of NO discipline), Shanny has at least set a standard that will only lead to further and further improvements. It’s a crappy job but I’d say he did pretty well and I begrudgingly wish him well(ish) in Toronto

I vote for Pronger.

“While Marchand doesn’t see Neal coming, he bears some responsibility for having been tripped and not moving fast enough to get out of the way of Neal’s knee.  The department of player safely hereby imposes a 5-game suspension on Brad Marchand for not having a proper understanding of physics.”

Making transparency the priority

The problem is that ‘transparency’ only matters if you’re being held to some standard.  Make all the videos you want but unless someone, somewhere insists on some sort of consistency or standards and, crucially, holds the department of player safety to those standards, it all really means nothing.

I don’t know. Pronger Physics might apply to some of these hits that are taking place today.
