Report- BOG Member Says Season Will Be Canceled Next Thursday If No Deal By Then

from Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press,

A veteran member of the NHL’s board of governors says commissioner Gary Bettman is prepared to cancel the season on Thursday if a deal has not been reached or appears to be imminent.

The chill that has settled on NHL labour negotiations is all part of a Don Fehr plan to push commissioner Bettman into a corner for one last squeeze and there could be unfortunate circumstances for hockey fans, said the governor who requested anonymity.

The league believes Fehr is unwilling to do a deal until after Bettman has cancelled the NHL season and the union leader is now slowing the process one last time to increase pressure on the commissioner, said the governor late Thursday night.

Such a gambit could be put to the test as early as next Thursday and the governor said it will come up empty for the players and finally the fans.

If the NHL and NHLPA cannot come to a settlement and sign a new collective bargaining agreement by Thursday of next week, Bettman will announce the cancellation of the 2012-13 season.

The governor theorized Fehr will then let things sit for a day or two before trying to leverage Bettman one more time into signing a deal viewed as better for the players.

Again, these owners aren’t going to invite you over for aspic and fox hunting for defending them on the internet, dudes. They’re not going to let you captain their sloop to their private island in the Keys. Give it up.

This should guarantee the Winnipeg paper access to more league insiders for the exclusive scoops.

Especially since supporting the players will lead to so many more and similar gifts.

On the other hand, it may just be possible for someone to share the players or the owners position out of something beyond simple greed.

Just throwing that out there.

Yep.  The ‘journalists’ that shill for the players will have player sources.  The ones that don’t won’t, or at least will have fewer.  Same thing for ‘league’ sources as well, I’d imagine.

The league believes Fehr is unwilling to do a deal until after Bettman has cancelled the NHL season

Just like the league believed Fehr had a clause in his contract that guaranteed an $8M payout if the Union signed a deal he didn’t approve?

Just like the league believed Fehr was misleading the NHLPA on the details of their offers?

Just like the league believes Fehr kills puppies in front of homeless children?

What a cockamamie belief this is.

Even worse, it’s a belief that the NHL has fed itself by the constant “this is the best deal you’re going to get…ok here’s a better deal” negotiating tactics. Canceling the remainder of the season is a meaningless gesture right now and it will be a meaningless gesture until about February, just like canceling games a small chunk at a time was essentially lip service to nothing.

You canceled the season on January 11th, did you?  Those games were never going to be played as scheduled as early as the October cancellations happened. There’s nothing saying that if the 11th comes and goes without a CBA that there can’t be a 48-game season thanks to an agreement on the 13th.

Well, except Bettman and Daly’s posturing says that… but their posturing hasn’t been trustworthy to this point.

To be fair, he does have them wear blindfolds so they only hear the screams.

And, Mandingo, Obama won’t invite you to the Whitehouse for an honorary dinner when he announces you will have a statue next to MLK, all due to your inspiring stand with the little guy against The Man.

I guess we’re both F’d
