Report- 2013 All-Star Game In Columbus

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

One source told The Dispatch last night (Friday) that the Blue Jackets – in the midst of the worst season in franchise history, and in dire need of good news – were informed yesterday by the league that they would be the host city next season.

The game is one of the NHL’s marquee events and would be, possibly, one of the most significant events ever hosted in the city.

In the past, the NHL would not approve Columbus as a host for the game because the area around Nationwide Arena lacked a sufficient number of high-end hotel rooms needed to house sponsors, celebrities, players, etc. But a 500-room Hilton, being built just blocks from Nationwide Arena, is planned for completion by Sept. 2012, a month before the 2012-13 season opens.

The Jackets really don’t deserve to host the ASG.  Worst run team in the league.  It will be good for Columbus though.  And I’ll probably check out ticket prices.  Doubt I’d go, but can’t hurt to see.

I do not want to split hairs here, but I think the NYI are the worst run franchise in the NHL.  Last yr FLA (with previous management) and ATL would have made for stiff competition.

I don’t want to say that Columbus is too big a potential hockey market to fail, because that’s not true, but with talk that the Coyotes, Islanders, and Devils are all in trouble with regards to where those teams will be playing in the future, the league would be making a smart choice to try and make sure that hockey interest can stay high in Columbus until that franchise can get a clue.

This is a last gasp effort to save a failed franchise. They are buying time, for a complete rebuild. I hope it works for the fans in Columbus’ sake.

Shouldn’t Columbus get an NHL team before they get an ASG?
